Modulation of Trophism and Fiber Type Expression of Dener- vated Muscle by Different Patterns of Electrical Stimulation

چکیده

After fifty years of basic research on electrostimulation-induced muscle plasticity, in recent years a few studies have employed long impulse biphasic electrical stimulation as a treatment for human denervated muscle. Tissue trophism and muscle power are improved to a level sufficient to restore some functions by Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES). These treatments usually start late after denervation due to clinical constrains and the past wrong believe that electrical stimulation may interfere with eventual myofiber reinnervation. Effects of denervation per se, of spontaneous or induced aneural myogenesis, and of longterm electrical stimulation starting either early or late after denervation are here described. Interrelations of these aspects are remarkable, and relevant to trophic and functional recovery from severe atrophy/dystrophy of long-term denervated muscle. If myogenesis could be modulated, we should be able to substantially abbreviate the time needed to achieve functional recovery of long term denervated human muscle by FES.

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) of Long-Term Dener- vated Muscles in Humans: Clinical Observations and Laboratory Findings

High intensity stimulation is a feasible clinical method for preventing effects of early denervation, however in long-term denervation exponential currents could not elicit tetanic contractions of denervated-degenerated muscles (DDM) powerful enough to sustain motility functions. In our earlier clinical work, we demonstrated that electrical stimulation with exponential current could slow down a...

Stage and Quantify Regenerative Myogenesis in FES-Induced Functional Recovery of Human Long-Term Permanent Dener- vated Muscle

Following denervation, skeletal muscle undergoes rapid loss in both mass and contractile force, with an accompanying series of changes in structure, biochemistry and physiology. Morphologic features of the long-term denervated muscle suggest that the original fibers are lost and those seen are the results of repeated cycles of cell death and regeneration. Markers of myogenic events in adult mus...

ENDOGENOUS RELEASE OF OPIATES BY REPETITIVE ELECTRICAL FIELD STIMULATION IN THE GUINEA-PIG AND RAT ILEAL LONGITUDINAL MUSCLE

The effect of repetitive electrical field stimulation and the response of the guinea-pig and rat ileal longitudinal muscle to single pulse stimulations was examined. Single pulse field stimulation produced twitch contraction which was inhibited by repetitive field stimulation (10 Hz, 40V, 0.5 msec for 5 m). This inhibition was largely, though never completely, reversed by naloxone. Contrac...

Optimized design and implementation of electrical stimuli to reduce muscle pain and treat osteoarthritis

Today, electrical stimulation as a treatment method by creating muscle contraction by creating internal electrical stimulation is a method to reduce muscle pain. In addition, it is used to treat osteoarthritis. The aim of this study was to study, design and implement optimized hardware for electrical muscle stimulators to reduce pain and treat osteoarthritis. Here, the design of the optimal sys...
